Watermelon Cucumber Pitcher Punch

Watermelon and cucumber are the same flavor at different volumes — both are mostly water, faintly green, and cooling. Together they make a punch base that tastes like the inside of a garden and disappears alarmingly fast in the heat.

Muddling the cucumber with the agave first is the step people skip. Sugar against cucumber skin pulls out far more flavor than muddling the flesh alone, and it dissolves the agave at the same time.

The Recipe

Serves 6 to 8 · 15 minutes

Ingredients

• 3 cups fresh watermelon juice, strained
• 1 large cucumber, peeled and sliced
• 1 cup fresh lime juice
• 1/2 cup agave nectar
• 1 1/2 cups Blanco Tequila
• 3 bottles (12 fl oz) Tehuacan Brillante sparkling mineral water
• Fresh mint sprigs for garnish
• Ice for the pitcher

Method

1. Muddle the cucumber slices and agave nectar in the bottom of a large glass pitcher.
2. Pour in the fresh watermelon juice, lime juice, and Blanco Tequila.
3. Stir well to combine the base ingredients.
4. Fill the pitcher halfway with ice to chill the mixture.
5. Pour in the Tehuacan Brillante sparkling mineral water last to ensure the carbonation stays lively.
6. Stir gently once more and drop in fresh mint sprigs before serving.

Notes

Strain the watermelon juice. Blended watermelon carries a pulp that separates in the pitcher and looks unappealing within twenty minutes.

A full cup of lime juice against three cups of watermelon sounds aggressive and is correct. Watermelon has almost no acid of its own.

Three bottles of mineral water, added last, after the ice. Everything else can be built well ahead of the first guest.
