- Description: The Aviation, stretched tall. Gin and maraschino stop being a sipper and become something you can drink on a porch.

A classic gin and maraschino cocktail is a beautiful thing and a short one. Two and a half ounces of liquid, gone in four sips, and then you are making another. It was designed for a room where somebody else is doing the mixing.

Lengthen it and the arithmetic changes. The same gin, the same maraschino, the same squeeze of lemon, but topped with four ounces of sparkling mineral water and served over a full glass of ice. The cherry liqueur gets less sweet as it opens up, the gin botanicals spread out, and you have a drink that lasts as long as the conversation.

## The Recipe

**Makes 1 · 5 minutes**

### Ingredients

- 1.5 oz dry gin
- 0.75 oz maraschino liqueur
- 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice
- 4 oz Tehuacan Brillante sparkling mineral water
- Ice
- 1 fresh cherry

### Method

1. Add the dry gin, maraschino liqueur, and fresh lemon juice to a cocktail shaker.
2. Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for ten seconds to chill.
3. Strain the liquid into a plain, smooth highball glass filled with fresh ice.
4. Top the glass with Tehuacan Brillante sparkling mineral water.
5. Stir gently to combine the flavors and garnish with a fresh cherry.

### Notes

Use a dry gin with real juniper. Maraschino liqueur is assertive and slightly funky, and a soft, floral modern gin will let it take over the glass.

Shake first, then top. Shaking with the sparkling water in the tin is how you make a mess and a flat drink. Chill the base properly, strain onto fresh ice, and pour the mineral water down the side.
