# Day 1: The Goodbye

Some places live in your blood. You can leave them. You just carry them the whole way.

Dawn in rural Puebla. Popocatépetl holds the horizon the way it always has, the mountain Frida has woken up under her entire life. In the kitchen, her mother is at the stove. Coffee in clay mugs. Hands she does not want to let go of. On the table, unremarked, a bottle of Tehuacán, the same water this family has poured for as long as anyone can remember.

Here is the quiet symmetry of it: the water made this trip first. It begins as glacier melt and spends roughly eight years filtering down through the volcanic rock beneath the Tehuacán Valley before it ever reaches the spring, mineral by mineral, bubble by bubble. Then it goes out into the world in glass bottles. Both the water and the woman come from the same volcanic country of Puebla. The water just left home before she did.

Today Frida leaves too. Austin is about nine hundred miles north.
